A little history...
Sainte-Maxime was originally situated on the Peigros hills to the north. Early settlements in the area date back to at least Roman times and Roman remains have been discovered locally.

With an increase in sea trade during the 12th century, Sainte-Maxime's port grew in importance. Wood, olive oil and wine were sent by boat to Marseilles, Italy and further afield. By the end of the 19th century, Sainte-Maxime had become a prestigious tourist destination.

Architecture
"La Tour Carrée" was erected by local monks for court hearings. Along with the guns of "Tour du Portalet" in St-Tropez, a battery of guns in "La Tour Carrée" helped to guard the Gulf against pirates.

Culture
Many artists, writers and poets have been attracted to Sainte-Maxime over the years. Jean de Brunhoff - creator of "Babar the Elephant" - wrote the first of the Babar series here. "La Plage des Eléphants" - a local beach - directly inspired pages 4 and 5 of the "Voyage de Babar".
